Myanmar

May 8, 2008 · by Jessica Hewitt

I just wanted to write a post to please ask all of you to pray for the people of Myanmar and for my sister. If you’ve been watching the news at all, I’m sure you’ve heard about the cyclone that hit there last week and the horrific conditions that it left in its path. The U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar is estimating the death toll at around 100,000. Their government is extremely corrupt and is doing very little (if anything) to help its people. Just yesterday (I think) they began granting a small number of Visas to relief workers to enter the country and help their people, but they have been very resistant to allow outside help. Everything in Myanmar is controlled by the government, including all of the media. Their TV stations have been reporting the government is welcoming help from anywhere and everywhere, (but in reality haven’t been letting relief workers in), so I’m sure the citizens think that no one cares about them.

Ash spent several weeks in Myanmar a few months ago, so when her church offered the opportunity to head there to work with a Christian relief agency, she jumped at the chance. The cyclone actually hit the exact area she had been working in previously. She is extremely excited and humbled to have the opportunity to return to Myanmar to aid their people and share Christ’s love. Lord willing, God will call people to Himself through this horrible tragedy. Myanmar is almost entirely Buddhist and very closed to the Gospel. This will be an awesome time for God to send in His people to spread His truth.
